Dorchester XLIV Sets Issues Agenda
February 22, 2008
The Dorchester Conference Board of Directors has announced the issues agenda for Dorchester XLIV, which takes place on February 29 - March 2, 2008, in Seaside, Oregon.

A central part of every Dorchester Conference is the debate and discussion by attendees of key public policy issues confronting Oregonians. This year's public policy topics are:
  • Roads in Oregon: What -- and how -- are you willing to pay?
  • Presidential Primaries: Can Oregon Gain Relevance?
  • Oregon Legislature: Did the February "special session" make the case for annual sessions?
  • Renewable Energy: Free Markets or Government Mandates?
During the conference, guest speakers will argue the pros and cons of each resolution. Delegates are provided the opportunity to discuss among themselves the merits, have floor debate, then vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on each issue. Vote totals on each topic are posted throughout the conference.

On Sunday of the conference, Dorchester delegates will have the opportunity to consider four ballot initiatives that will come before Oregon voters this fall which address the topics of education, prison sentencing, and limiting lawyers' fees in civil cases. A delegate selected issue chosen by a majority vote will also be debated on Sunday.

Dorchester XLIV president, State Representative Linda Flores said, "The debate, discussion and vote on issues are signature elements of the Dorchester Conference. It's grassroots politics in action and it let's policymakers have a sense of what Oregonians are thinking."

The Dorchester Conference, founded in 1964, is a unique grassroots political conference. It provides a forum for hundreds of people from across Oregon to discuss current issues, interact with elected officials, learn about politics and have fun on the Oregon Coast.
